Freak Alley entrance in Boise Idaho

West Coast Road Trip Day Seven: Boise, ID June 2nd, 2021

day Seven – june 2, 2021: 10:57 PM Mountain Time

I am writing this excerpt a little buzzed, so hopefully there are no spelling errors…we left Pinedale, Wyoming today and headed to Boise, Idaho. I planned on moving to Boise before even visiting the city, but then had bilateral hernia surgery November 2020.

On the route from Pinedale, WY we followed along the Hoback and Snake Rivers. As we entered Idaho, we were greeted by the Palisades Reservoir. It had emerald green waters and was surrounded by red dirt and rocks. It accented the water well.

As I drove through Idaho, there were huge farms, numerous old Ford and Dodge trucks, and rolling hills. At one point we stopped at a Shell gas station. These gas stations in the west have almost anything anyone might need to purchase.

The landscape eventually turned to desert and the temp reached 95º Fahrenheit. Boise looked like the oasis it is with its green trees from a distance. Once we checked into The Grove, we started hitting restaurants and brewhouses. We started at Bittercreek Alehouse and I sampled the Alaskan Smoked Porter. I decided to roll with the Konig Pilsner, and we ordered chips and salsa and fries with homemade ketchup. The fries tasted great, and this was expected since Idaho is known for its potatoes.

After leaving Bittercreek, we stopped at Pie Hole across the street where I ordered a slice of vegan pizza and the Teddy Bear Picnic Golden Session Ale. It was a very light beer, but refreshing. Pie Hole was a really cool pizza joint with stickers slapped all over the interior.

Shortly after finishing the beer and pizza we walked down Freak Alley. The street art on the buildings was amazing. Hoping to take photos with the camera on the street tomorrow rather than just my iPhone camera.

A cool store we hit was the Re-pop toy store. They had a huge lego set built with over 30,000 pieces. I bought some stickers and inappropriate pens and pencils. I also bought “Ready-to-eat” Hazelnut Pocket Latte from there which was actually good!

From there I accidentally led us to Mattacks Biergarten when looking for the Funky Taco restaurant. I ordered a Mountain Time Golden Ale from Sawtooth Brewery and shot the breeze with the bartender. She directed us to Hyde Park, specifically Parilla’s bar. Tom and I ordered Pacifico’s here and Alex got me peanut butter and honey taco wraps in soft shells. It could have been the alcohol, but it tasted pretty good.

I forgot to mention that prior to Parilla’s, we stopped at Goody’s and I ordered an iced drip coffee with Almond milk. Alex also ordered a coffee and Tom got an ice cream. I also got a Hyde Park pressed coin there as a souvenir.

We finished the night off at the Hyde Park Pub and Grill. I ordered a Big Kona Wave Golden Ale and got us some chips and salsa. The beer was good, but the chips were a little soft. We walked back to The Grove in the dark and took some iPhone photos and videos of the colorful fountains in the city center.

I really enjoyed this city and the locals gave some great tips. The cashier at Re-pop said you could spend nine hours floating down the river nearby. The bartender at Mattacks said her rent was $2,200 for a two-bedroom apartment downtown. She also said mountain biking was a blast and McCall was great for hot springs.

The Sawtooth Mountain Range is also not very far away. The city also felt very safe. In summary, I want to spend a significant amount of time in Boise, Idaho in the future to really immerse myself in it. Based off of doing all the things mentioned in this journal entry, I loved it!
